Lesson #1 - What Makes You So Stinking Remarkable?
One of the biggest mistakes inexperienced leaders make is not truly understanding the unique contribution they bring to an organization. This lack of clarity can have an adverse effect on your career because you are not aware of the ideal opportunities that give you a chance to do what you love and do best every day. You treat all opportunities as equal, not really understanding why you succeed in some and struggle in others. Not only does it impact your performance on the job, this lack of clarity can prevent you from achieving success on a consistent basis.
While you may have many similarities with other leaders (i.e., same degree, same university, similar skills, or even similar career or industry experience), there is one thing that makes you remarkably different. That is your individual talent. That unique way in which you think or process things, the way you feel about or respond emotionally in situations, or the way you do things, are all clues to your natural talent. They are clues to what makes you a “purple cow!”
What is a purple cow? Seth Godin, author of the book Purple Cow argues that the only way to cut the hyper-clutter of products and advertising today is to innovate something new, unique and remarkable — like a purple cow.”
All leaders are not designed equal. You are different. You are remarkable. Your individual talent is what separates you from all other leaders. Building awareness around your natural talent and developing a level of understanding of how to leverage that talent to achieve bold goals or persevere through challenging situations is what makes you a “purple cow!” The critical question is, can you define it? Can you articulate your natural talent? Do you have the recipe that enables you to duplicate your best day over and over and over again so that you maximize your impact and influence as a leader?
